| The four friends |
Author's Note: This is a true life event that inspired me.
The Beginning
Back then, in those days of innocence, there were four friends who came together from different backgrounds. They formed a bond in a way that many people thought would be a friendship turned brotherhood; how wrong they were and how disappointed they became.
It goes like this: in the year 2000, a young teen named Dennis relocated to a new state due to his dad’s work. He was introduced to one of the popular local lads to show him the ways of the community and how not to cause trouble. He came to create a tight bond with this village lad and tried to teach him the ways of the city, but then the lad's father wouldn't have it. Claiming everything about the city would spoil his son, he forbade his son from hanging out with Dennis, but they never listened nor cared what the father had to say about the city.
The Other Friends
Now there is Prince; he grew up in the same area Dennis found himself. Prince was living with his mum’s friend, who is a nurse. It seems Prince’s mum and dad had marital problems and were separated. Prince’s mum lived in a faraway community, but his dad lived about one kilometer off the town where Prince stayed with his mum's friend.
Prince was introduced to Dennis when Dennis had a medical problem and was treated by the friend of Prince's mother. She told Dennis to play with Prince and said they would soon be in the same school; it turned out she was right. Dennis and Prince started school at the same time and were both in the same class as seatmates. They went to school together and hung out afterward. This went on until they finished elementary school and were waiting for high school admission.
While they were waiting, Dennis was helping his elder brother’s friend, Bruno, with his notes. By chance, Bruno told Dennis his younger brother would be coming to stay with him from the village, and he would need Dennis to be there for him since he had no one. Dennis agreed. That is how he came to know John, and he quickly introduced John to Prince. After a very short time, their admissions were out and they were all in the same class.
Things were going very well among them and they were doing things together. They even went to school together and sat together. Then one day, Prince introduced them to a boy named Tom. He told them Tom and him grew up in his father's area and he would like it if they included Tom in their circle; both Dennis and John agreed and welcomed Tom.
So it went on, this great friendship, until they left high school. After their final examinations, Prince’s uncle found him a job with a federal agency, while Dennis went to the university for a four-year course. Both Tom and John couldn't get admission into the university, so they chose to do a diploma program. After schooling, Dennis and John couldn't get good jobs, while Tom got a job with the state government—and then, trouble started.
The Change
Dennis met Tom one particular day and congratulated him on his new job.
"Congratulations bro, I'm glad you got this job. It is a start of something new and great."
"Thank you Dennis, but I'm busy right now and I don't think you should be here."
"Really! What do you mean?"
"See, I can't associate with you because we are in different leagues in society. Man, you are broke and you have nothing important to say to me, so chill, take a turn, and move."
"Wow, Tom!"
"Yes."
"Are you looking down on me? Just because I'm jobless? Did I ever offend you to be insulted like this?"
"Please just leave me, I'm busy. Good day," Tom said, as he went in and slammed the door.
Dennis was sad, but he never took it to heart. He wondered, How can a friend I grew up with treat me like this just because I'm jobless? How can he look me in the eyes and ask me to leave? We have gone through thick and thin; we struggled together. And yet, he looks down on me just because I'm still struggling to find a job.
One thing about Dennis is that he hardly gets offended if he knows he hasn't offended anyone. He just takes it as one of those things, or rather, as fate wants it to be. So, he went to Prince to inquire about Tom’s behavior.
"Prince, my main man, how are you doing?"
"I'm very fine, Dennis."
"I'm just coming from Tom's side and he is acting funny. What is the matter with him?"
"I don't know. Please, I am not Tom's keeper and don't disturb me about such things."
"Wow, Prince! Is that really you?"
"What do you mean?"
"What you just said now?"
"Well, I said what I have to say, that is all. If you have nothing else to say, you can just go, please."
"It is okay, I will be going."
"Who cares," was Prince's reply.
Dennis shook his head sadly and left, wondering what was really going on and why they were behaving that way. He went to John’s house and explained what he just went through with both Tom and Prince.
"I thought it was only me," John said. "Well, seems like they did the same to you too."
"Why would they do that?"
"Maybe they think we want to beg them for money since they are the ones working."
"Hmmm, but that will never happen. You know me; I can never beg them or ask them for help."
"I know. I just feel getting a job changed them."
"It is okay. Anyway, I will see you around, I’ve got an appointment."
"Okay bro, later."
Years went by and things weren't going well for both Dennis and John. Prince married and had two kids, but he wasn't content and turned into a wife-beater. He would beat his wife without any provocation and kept carrying street girls around. He maltreated his wife in a way that was beyond reality. Both interventions by Dennis and John were rebuffed; they were warned not to "put mouth" in his matters, told that the likes of them who are jobless should mind their own business.
Meanwhile, Tom married and had a set of twins. He didn’t care about how Prince chose to live his life or treat his wife, nor did he care how Dennis and John were doing. In fact, he cut them off and warned them to keep clear of his house; if they saw him anywhere, they should pretend they didn't know him.
One particular day, Prince’s wife came to Dennis and told him Prince had kicked her out of the house, asking her and her people to refund the bride price he paid. She was so distracted that tears were flowing freely. She kept asking, "What did I do? What offense did I commit? Is it a crime to be a good housewife? We just had a kid who is not even up to six months old and he is kicking me out."
Dennis could do nothing but comfort her and give her advice on what to do. And so it went for another few years. Then, one particular day, Dennis got a message from a very good friend who told him to send his particulars and that he would give him a job. Just like that, Dennis did, and he got a lucrative job which came with a car, a house, and all-expenses-paid trips to any corner of the world.
He was so excited and rushed to tell John the good news. John was overjoyed; he prayed for Dennis and thanked God for His mercies. Dennis started his new job and worked for four months before he was paid his full entitlement and other benefits, which summed up to twenty million dollars.
He quickly called John and advised him to start any business of his choice that he would finance. John was so excited; he started his venture and in no time began getting huge profits and living a good life. Dennis also helped Prince’s ex-wife to start a business, which she is doing well in.
Soon, news came that Prince was out of a job. He was caught red-handed in a corrupt practice, which is a serious offense, and he is now begging his friends and wife for forgiveness. He has come to the conclusion that compassion is an ingredient in the journey of life. Prince learned his lesson the hard way: you can't have everything and grow it with wickedness.
